Deborah Benhamu Encaoua
Deborah is a first year doctoral student in Curriculum and Pedagogy specializing in math education. She holds an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Toronto and a Masters in Child Study and Education from the Jackman Institute for Studies in Education at OISE/UT. Deborah also has five years of classroom experience, teaching grade 6, 7 and 8 mathematics. She is interested in financial numeracy, mathematics that promotes citizenship and teacher education.
Between 2016 and 2019, Deborah created and spearheaded a culturally responsive math program for Syrian refugees under the supervision of Professor Esther Geva. Deborah also developed a pilot Mathematics Vocabulary Measure (MVM) as an assessment tool to differentiate between students’ vocabulary and content knowledge. Her research experience further extended to creating and implementing a TDSB after school math program that focused on building math content knowledge and math academic language for ESL students in Grade 3.

Andrew Li
Hi, everyone. My name is Andrew. I am a first-year Master of Arts student. My research interest is how active learning might impact students’ financial numeracy development. Besides being a full-time student at OISE, I am also an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT). I am certified to teach at the Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels. I am also in the process of completing the primary education ABQ. My goal is to become a K-12 educator. Currently, I am supplying for TDSB at the secondary level. During my free time, I like to explore different parts of Toronto. I am a fan of bakeries and cafes. I love to visit coffee shops to explore the different available bakery options in Toronto. I am a university teacher and researcher in education and organizational studies. Currently, I am in a postdoctoral stage at the University of Toronto (UoT). My research interests range from Mathematics Education, Entrepreneurship, and Financial Education to topics such as Economic Psychology, Economic Financialization, Self-management of work, Ideology, Epistemology, Research Methodology, People Management, and Meritocracy. I believe in a critical perspective of research and teaching, where education should be liberating and emancipatory.
